{Author Spotlight} Ethan POV from Through the Lens

Hi Guys!
Today we get to share a scene from Through the Lens in Ethans POV.
How awesome is that!?
Sit back, relax and enjoy!

Being a twin isn’t all that bad, nor is it all that good. Being the fat twin makes things a little worse. Seventeen year old, Jessa Shelby has been all but ignored. Trimmed down, but not skinny like her sister, she has decided to make her mark in her final year in high school.

Things begin anew the summer before her senior year when she makes friends with Ethan Hart, a boy with a twisted past, and Allie, his near celebrity status girlfriend, while taking pictures with her new prized possession. Hanging out with them opened her eyes to a lot of new possibilities including Josh Macon, whom she’s secretly crushed on all through high school. No longer the ‘fat girl’, Josh now seems interested in her too.

Long before the day comes to graduate, Jessa finds herself gasping for air. With her vision clouded from tears born of pain as the straps from her precious camera tighten around her throat, clarity sets in. They say that just before you die your life flashes before your eyes. And on the threshold of death claiming her, she finds that partially true. Her flash begins as if to explain just how she ended up on Death’s door. With mere moments left, she has to wonder if trust had come at a very high price.

{Author spotlight} Excerpt from Through the Lens by Shannon Dermott

Hi guys!
The spotlight on Shannon Dermott is coming to an end but it is not done yet! We have a few posts still lined up before the month is over. Today we have an excerpt from the book Through the Lens! And tomorrow you will be able to read Ethan's POV from this very novel! Isn't that awesome?

Excerpt from Through The Lens

I took in the black boots, black jeans, and then a black tee strained from his defined muscles. Add to those visuals, his movie star face framed by a full head of dark hair that caught the wind just right. My finger was trigger happy (click), and I couldn't help but snap a few shots of him (click. click. click). And although he was facing me, he hadn’t been looking at me. His gaze was directed out into the masses, people watching I imagined. My hand nervously moved to the lens to tighten the shot on his face.
And that’s when I saw the color of his eyes. They were the bluest of blue that would make the sky want to cry from jealously. He was hot, a ten on the Richter scale.  We’re talking catastrophic heartbreak.  But the way his eyes bore into my lens-. Crap, he looked at directly me. Saw me. My nervous finger clicked off the shot before I shifted away in embarrassment. I did a 180 towards good old Abe and walked a couple steps, feigning more interest as I started to line up an extreme long shot of that memorial. I needed to get out of there. Had he known I was taking pictures of him? I was poised to walk away in the direction of the memorial and make my escape when I heard a voice behind me. He was too close and I knew because I felt his breath on the back of my exposed neck. And I knew who it might be by the sheer amount of baritone in the voice. Slowly, I turned around, heart knocking against my chest.
It was him. And he was like really tall. I'd already been tall but he had a good head over me, making me look up at him, guiltily while he looked down at me with no hint of shame. In fact his face was surprisingly empty, devoid of anything I could read. With his head at an angle, he spoke again, “So, do I get to see?”
With no experience at all with guys other than Bradley—I mean who dates the fat girl— I was struck by his proximity, the fact that he, looking like that, was talking to me.  And I am barely able to stutter out, “See what?”
Chuckling, he exposed impossibly white teeth, he said, “My picture.”
The duh, must have crossed my face and I tilted the camera, which had been cradled in my palm, to reveal the ancient camera I was using. “This isn’t digital.”
“That’s a problem then,” he said, his face expressionless again. No, there was expression, I thought looking up at that face, hands shaking.  And the look I saw there made me swallow hard.
“Why?” I asked, feeling like cotton had filled my throat.
“I think there must be laws about that or something.”
“Laws,” I repeated, perplexed.
“Yeah, laws. I don’t think I gave you permission to take my picture.”  His posture said he was dead serious.  Were there laws? I had no idea. And would he try to call the police or something. I didn't mean to do anything. I had been caught up in the feeling of the new camera, caught up in the sheer amount of attractiveness one person could have.
Taking my camera in his hand, the strap around my neck pulled me closer to him.  He didn’t seem to notice that we were basically sharing too much personal space.  He studied my camera like he knew a thing or two about them turning it over this way and that.
“You’re not going to open it, are you?” I asked meekly, scared he would press charges. And that if he'd open it carelessly, try to force it open, the vintage camera might break let alone ruin the film inside.
With a sardonic arch of his brow, he said, “I should.  Do you have a release form?  I mean, you can’t go posting these pictures without permission.”
“I, I never,” I stammered.  I had no idea how many laws I might be breaking.  “I promise I won’t post any of your pictures.”
Not looking at all convinced, he said, “How do I know that? Do you know how much my face is worth?”
Priceless, I wanted to say but kept that little comment to myself. I didn't want to seem creepier than he probably already thought me to be. I found myself licking my suddenly dry lips.  Was he a model?  There was no doubt he could be.
Sighing, at my lack of response, he said, “Well, I guess you owe me then.” Owe him, I didn’t even know him.

{Author Spotlight} Giveaway of books by Shannon Dermott

Today we have something really fun for all of our readers! We have a giveaway for you. Three books by Shannon Dermott in paperback. The best thing is, it's international! You enter via Rafflecopter at the end of this post
So on to the prizes of this little giveaway!
Beg for Mercy (Cambion #1)
Waiting for Mercy (Cambion #2)
Through the lens

Everyone dreams of that first kiss. Of that magic moment when your lips finally meet those of that special person you’ve waited your whole life for. A little awkward, a little scary, a little hot and every bit amazing. We speculate that the whole world will shake and time will just stop. No one, however, ever imagines that kiss to bring Death himself knocking. Sixteen year old Mercy Moore's life just got more complicated. The kiss that originally could have meant she would finally have a boyfriend now was the kiss that could have very nearly ended his life. A small detail her mother conveniently never told her will take her life for an abrupt u-turn. Dating, no love, was now completely and utterly impossible. And the boy well, that boy would never be the same. But life, however cruel, goes on. Far too soon for her taste, Mercy finds herself at a senior party with the elite students of her school and her best friend. And of all things, playing a stupid game that could very well mean the death of someone in that small room. If it were not for her best friend, the hottest guys in school, and a small need to fit in, she may have been able to escape the disaster that was to come. Her worst nightmare, her personal curse, her very life, only gets dangerously worse.

What do you do when you’ve been to hell and back, literally? For Mercy, it meant the beginning of the end for everything. Love, Happiness, Life. When the people important to her are thrown into danger and she is forced to choose who to save, what will Mercy do? When the demon within her has its own agenda, going to new lengths to fulfill it, how will she cope? And when a new nemesis arrives, with a sole focus to take what belongs to her, how will she survive? Some situations make you stronger, some make you weak. She used to run from confrontation but the need to uncover secrets will harden her resolve to make new choices.  In the end, someone else will suffer the consequences. Who will be burned by her very existence? And what will become of everything she holds dear? Mercy’s life wasn’t easy before and things aren’t getting easier now.

{Author Spotlight} "When I'm not writing" by Shannon Dermott

We wanted to know what Shannon do when she is not writing so we asked her to write a guest post about it!

When I'm not writing by Shannon Dermott

When I’m not writing I can be found with my family, shopping or reading. And oh, how I love to read. But I don’t often have the time to.

When I do have a chance to read, I’m reading books by some of my favorite authors.

One of them is Nancy Straight. Both of her “new adult” series Destiny and Touched are two of my favorite. Her stories are innovative and unique. I love the way she weaves romance and action to keep your heart pumping. I won’t say more because I don’t want to spoil anything but I will say that they are really worth picking up.

Another favorite author of mine is Charlotte Abel.  She has an edgy young adult series called Channie named after the main character. This series is funny and sexy but still YA.  She also has a “new adult” series that begins with the novel, River’s Recruit. Another world rich series that is so imaginative and interesting, I read through the night.

One more series that I’m dying to read is the final book would be the Significance series by Shelly Crane. The book is Independence.  Oh my goodness, this series is so good. Sweet but on the edge of your seat kind of good. The final book has been released, but I haven’t yet had the time to read it. However, I have it on good authority that it is really good. It tops my list as the next book I will read.

After the holidays and I finish Angel of Mercy, I will be picking up a book.

{Author spotlight} Interview with Shannon Dermott!

Today we have an interview about the book Beg for mercy with the lovely Shannon Dermott! We want to know more about her work with her first book and the Cambion series.

- What was your inspiration to Beg for Mercy?

My inspiration was to write something new and different in young adult paranormal romance. I wanted to explore what Mercy was and how she would handle it.

- When you first started writing Beg for Mercy, did you know it would be a series?

Yes. I knew it would be a series, but I wasn’t sure how far I was going to take it until I finished the first book.

- How many books do you plan in the Cambion series?

It’s outlined at six books. But I would say anywhere between four and six.

- There are a lot of young men in Mercy’s life. Why so?

This is a popular question. If a girl is very attractive, I find it hard to believe that only one guy would be interested in her. Thus there are more guys vying for Mercy’s attention. However, she only has one boyfriend throughout the series so far.

- Do you have any favorite among them?

There is one that holds a soft spot within me. But I love them all.

- Do you already have the ending planned as to whom Mercy will end up with?

The final chapter to the series is already written. So, yes, I know who she will end up with.

- How would you describe Mercy?

Quiet, shy, respectful, naïve in love, and smart in books. At least that is how she starts out. She is beginning to realize that although some of those characteristics are good qualities, they hold her back in the things she needs to accomplish.

Thank you so much Shannon!

{Author spotlight} Excerpt from Beg for Mercy!

Today we have an excerpt for you from Beg for Mercy by Shannon Dermott. We think it will be perfect for you to read this before we post the guys POV's

Excerpt from Beg for Mercy

Before any one of us could say anything, a tall girl, clad in a taupe leather vest and animal print painted-on pants with golden tones of blond hair hastily pulled back in a braid, materialized in front of us.  She was a vision to behold, appearing out of thin air.
  “Where is he?” she demanded.
I’m sure my eyes were wide because she focused on me. Her golden eyes burned into me like fire.  I had a moment of choice, to fight or flee.  “Who?” I asked boldly, surprising myself.
Her eyes narrowed into slits when she spoke, mimicking the shifters with her stance. She gave no notice to my tone with her arms folded across her chest. “The rat fink who cheated on me with my sister,” she said coolly.
“Bernadette,” a voice said behind me.
I whirled around as did Flynn who’d been standing beside me.  Sebastian was poised directly behind me.  He was gorgeous, dressed in a charcoal shirt and dark wash jeans.  He stole my breath away just by the sight of him.  My heart rate leaped more than it had when the mysterious girl appeared in our path.
I turned back around when the girl, Bernadette, began to speak again.  Her arms were no longer folded in front of her.  Instead they were extended in front of her.  “Rat,” she said sternly.  Her eyes were on fire.  “How could you kill my sister?”
Lightning fast, her hands were a glow in fiery orange orbs.  Revving up, like a pitcher in a baseball game, I noticed Flynn move for the first time.  He began moving forward with timid steps.  Even though things were moving quickly now, I caught every detail that happened.  I felt arms come around my waist and darkness begin to invade my eyes.  I knew what was about to happen.  Before the obscurity overtook my vision, Bernadette’s attention was on Flynn.  I had a moment to see her blast him back with a fiery ball before I’d been transported elsewhere.  I had no way of knowing if he was okay.
I didn’t even let Sebastian speak, “What the hell? Take me back!” I yelled.  With the trees still surrounding us, I knew we were still in the woods but that wasn’t my concern.
“I just wanted to make sure you’re safe,” he said calmly holding out his hands in a gesture of peace from my wrath.
“Flynn could be hurt,” I exclaimed.
He nodded and a moment later he was gone.  I hoped he was going to get Flynn because if he wasn’t he wouldn’t have to worry about Bernadette.  He would have to worry about me.  With life and death an issue, I’d found who I was.  I was a fighter not a flighter.
If the events of the evening weren’t scary, I might have laughed when Flynn and Sebastian reappeared in an embrace.  They looked at each other for a second before separating rapidly.  I scrutinized Flynn.  He appeared to be okay so, I had to assume he was.
“What the,” Flynn began to say when a voice boomed out from not far away.
“I know you’re there Rat.  You can’t hide from me.”  I recognized that voice even though I’d only heard it once.  Bernadette had found us just that quickly.  I saw the glowing balls of fire in the distance.  Sebastian came to me at that moment.
“I don’t want to leave you, but I think if I do I will draw her away.  I’m sorry for this. I’ll be back to check on you as soon as I can,” he said in a whisper before disappearing from my existence.
His assumption was wrong. “So you’re the girl he’s with now,” Bernadette said from about thirty feet away looking at me.
Yes, he’d most assuredly been wrong.  She hadn’t left.  Crap.  So, I answered her with an emphatic, “No.”
She hadn’t waited for my answer and it was too late for me to react.  I stared like a deer in headlights.  A glowing ball of heat was already headed my way.  Flynn saw it before I did and his reflexes had been better than mine.  I was on the ground with him on top of me when the orbs soared passed.  The burning ball of flame narrowly missed him with the slight exception of a burn on his right arm.  The orbs blasted bark off the tree they hit that was behind us.
Bernadette was closing in on us now.  This time it would be impossible for her aim to miss.  Bleakly, I thought it would be a great time for Sebastian to make a reappearance.  A bright light like a car’s headlights shined through the trees casting a white glow onto her.  For whatever reason her face grew pale, then she dissipated.
I shifted under Flynn’s weight turning to see what made the illumination, but it was gone.  Besides being in the woods, I wasn’t even sure where we were.  There must have been a road nearby and the beam of car lights somehow frightened her away.  I couldn’t fathom why car lights would frighten her but I wasn’t going to knock the gift horse that saved us.  What I hadn’t expected was the figure to appear through the trees.

{Author Spotlight} Interview with Shannon Dermott

It is so fun to have Shannon Dermott here with us this month and today we have an interview with her. This interview will be all about her writing and we are so looking forward to read her answers!

1. When and why did you begin writing?
It’s hard to pinpoint the when. I guess I started writing serious back in 2009.  What pushed me over the edge to actually put pen to paper was a number of things. The biggest reason being it was a dare to someone close to me that I could do it.

2. When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I’m not sure that’s hit me yet. I tell stories that hopefully people like to read.

3. What inspired you to write your first book?
What inspired me to write Beg for Mercy was to write something not done before in young adult paranormal. Based on feedback/reviews, I’m hoping I succeeded in that goal.

4. Do you have a specific writing style?
I tend to write more in first person. And I’ve been called the queen of cliffhangers.

5. How long does it take you to write a book?

It doesn’t take that long for the first draft.  However, it takes several months from the first rough draft to the final version.

6. Who is your biggest supporter about your work?
My fans are my biggest supports. If not for them, I probably would have given up writing after my books had been pirated over this past year.

7. Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
I have the best readers. They talk to me on twitter, facebook, my blog, & email to ask all kinds of questions and let me know what they want. The biggest question I get lately is ‘When Angel of Mercy will be released?’. The next biggest question or comment is who Mercy will or should choose.

8. What genre would you say your books belong in?
The Cambion series is a young adult paranormal romance. Through the Lens/Broken Len are young adult contemporary romance novels.

9. Are the names of the characters in your novels important?
Hmm, I wouldn't say there is a story behind the names that has significance to either series. It may be true of another series I have, but that hasn't been released yet.

10. What about the titles?
In the Cambion series, the titles revolve around the name of the main character Mercy. The titles do mean something as do the covers.
Through the Lens came around because a major focus in the story is a 35mm SLR camera that Jessa finds and her life will be brought into focus through the lens.

11. Are there any occupational hazards to being a writer?
Yes, there are times when my creative muse is flowing but I’m unable to write because it’s family time or other obligations that I have to attend to. But alternatively, my family has to share me with my computer.

12. How do you react to a bad review of one of your books?
I guess it all depends on how it was worded. I don’t expect everyone to love what I write. Every reader has their own preferences in what they like to read, style, etc. But I’m human, mean spirited reviews could hurt or piss me off. However, overall, I take all feedback as constructive.

*******************************************

We will have lots of posts by Shannon this month and you can look forward to Interviews, guest posts, a giveaway and POV posts from the Cambion series aswell as other books Shannon has written! AWESOME or what?

Anyway without further due I give you SHANNON DERMOTT

AUTHOR BIO

Born in the north and raised in the south, Shannon Dermott is an author of paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and contemporary romance for young adults. Although originally a northerner, she grew up during her formidable years in the southern heat, hanging out and having lots of fun.

It was during those years, she explored her creative side with fictional romance stories about all her teen crushes. Fun times!

Her love for reading constantly conflicts with her need to write. Interestingly, she reads more police procedural than fantasy or romance. When not reading or writing, Shannon is going to the movies, hanging out with family and friends, or best of all shopping. She loves all kinds of music and is currently obsessed with Thirty Seconds to Mars.

Just as much love Shannon has for reading is her first passion for numbers and math.
But though it began with her obsession of reading and math, weaving stories won out in the end.
